While a painting major in college, I took an elective in textile design and discovered batik and Shibori, traditional dyeing techniques from Asia that produce patterns on fabric. In love with the color geometries coming out of the dye bath I began to split my creative time between oil painting and fabric dying. Painting taught me to closely observe the physical world and explore the spatial powers of color while at the same time I was playing in the dye studio with abstract form and pattern. Both processes melded and influenced my work over the years.
